LET THEIR VOICES BE HEARD : Quotations from life stories related to physical activity, food and eating, and body image
by Betty Holmes, Suzanne Pelican, and Fred Vanden Heede

Let Their Voices Be Heard is a collection of quotations from narratives (or life stories) from 103 individuals who shared the challenges they have faced, the successes they have achieved, and the insights they have gained related to their experiences with physical activity, food and eating, and body image.

We now seem to be in the midst of an ‘epidemic’ of obesity that is as troubling as it is difficult to comprehend....  One of the great contributions of Let Their Voices Be Heard is that it allows us to see that we are not alone, and if many people are struggling with the same problem, then perhaps there is something more to the picture than the sum of individual failings.”

The Process of Becoming

THE PROCESS OF BECOMING: A Democratic Nietzschean Philosophical Pedagogy for Individualization
by Leslie Sassone, Ph.D., Purdue University

Nicholas C. Burbules of the University of Illinois attests, "Leslie Sassone offers a bold re-reading of Nietzsche's ideas and their implications for education. Diverging from many standard interpretations, Sassone emphasizes what she calls the "democratic" (small 'd') Nietzsche. Nietzsche is a notoriously difficult writer, one who resists easy or consistent characterizations. Sassone's conception of democratic education, growing out of her interpretation of Nietzsche, is based in the concepts of individualization and self-care, posing a challenging alternative to liberal communitarian, progressivist, and critical pedagogy conceptions of democratic education. Her style of composition, including innovative elements that she calls "patchwording" and "snowballing," exemplifies a distinctive approach to postmodern writing.
